Advocacy

The RJP Maine Legislative Committee, a team of 5 volunteers, was formed in 2020 to advocate for fundamental changes in the criminal legal system in Maine through public policy making. It gives top priority to supporting, drafting, testifying, and networking with state legislators and policymakers to advance legislation that promotes the formal practices of restorative justice.

The Committee also works to support ‘restorative-minded’ legislation in collaboration with the Executive Director.

When needed, Action Alerts are sent out during the Legislative Session alerting subscribers to contact their elected officials. If you’re interested in receiving an Action Alert, sign up here.

The Committee does its work in several ways, including:

  • Researches best practices in other regions of the country as background for its work on bills at the Statehouse.
  • Monitors the legislative schedule and attends committee public hearings and work sessions.
  • Works with legislators to both draft and fine-tune legislation.
  • Rallies support for restorative minded activities in Augusta and beyond.
  • Creates and/or participates in a collaborative of RJ organizations to support the committee’s work.
